Not Just Smart, but Kind: How Windsor Hall Builds Character

When most people think of a top private school in Vancouver, they picture report cards and test scores, but that’s only part of the story. At Windsor Hall, we believe that the kind of person your child is becoming matters just as much as what they’re learning. That’s why character is crucial. We don’t just want students who get the right answers. We want students who hold the door open. Who speak up when something’s not fair. Who care about others and know how to lead with heart. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about growing in the right direction.

What Is the IB Learner Profile?

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we focus on more than academics. The IB Learner Profile outlines 10 qualities that help students become thoughtful, responsible people:

Catching Character in Action: Golden Pins

Every month at Windsor Hall, we focus on one IB trait as a school community. Teachers introduce the trait, reflect on what it looks like in action, and look for real world examples in the classroom and beyond.

For example, to showcase the learner profile trait of caring, students delivered flowers to strangers and posted magnetic notes with uplifting messages in public spaces, initiatives which were picked up several news outlets. As the month goes on, teachers and staff keep their eyes open. Did a student invite someone sitting alone to join their group? Did they speak up with honesty during a group project? Did they help clean up a space that wasn’t theirs? These small, everyday moments matter. When a student stands out for showing the featured trait, they’re awarded a Golden Pin. It’s a simple, visible recognition, but it carries weight. It tells students: We see who you are and it matters!

The Diamond Pin: Going One Step Further

At the end of the month, we choose one standout student who fully embodied the trait. That student receives the Diamond Pin, our highest character honor.
It’s not about being perfect or just having the best grades. It’s about being someone others look up to. Someone who sets the tone for their peers through quiet leadership and compassion.

Why Focus on Character?

Because in the long run, it’s not just knowledge that sets our students apart, it’s how they use it. We want our students to grow into people who do what’s right, not just what’s easy. People who treat others with respect and take responsibility when they fall short. We want them to become trustworthy teammates, compassionate leaders, and thoughtful friends.

This approach pays off in big ways. Students feel safer, more connected, and more motivated when they know they’re seen for more than just their test scores. At Windsor Hall, we believe the best private schools should teach more than just curriculum. They should teach character. They should raise kids who are not just smart, but kind. Not just accomplished, but principled. Every Golden Pin, every Diamond Pin, every conversation about empathy or fairness, it all adds up. Our students may not remember every lesson we teach, but they will remember how it felt to be in a place where character was nurtured.

And long after they leave our classrooms, we believe they’ll keep carrying those values with them. That’s the Windsor Hall way.
